Do you find yourself regularly asking yourself “what should my career be?” If you answered yes, you aren’t alone.

Whether you are just out of high school, finished college, or just looking to advance your career it’s common to find yourself wondering what your career should be.

To find your career you’ll need to decide what your career goals are.

My Future Career

Not to worry, because finding the answer to what your future career should be isn’t that difficult, even if it seems obscure at the moment. Sometimes it’s about getting to know yourself better. Sometimes it’s about understanding how to match your personality and education to the right career. In today’s modern times it’s common for someone to change careers several times. There are a number of quizzes and career personality tests available to help guide you in the right direction, and help you find your career.

Discover How to Advance Your Career

How long since you asked yourself “what should my career be.” If it’s been years you may have settled for a job that isn’t nearly as fulfilling as it could be. We all have talents and when we express them we can make the world a much happier place and make ourselves that much happier too.

Uncover Who You Were Meant to Be

The practice of discovering what direction your career should take begins with discovering who you are.

The person you hides beneath your day-to-day stresses; the person who plows forward showing up daily for a job he/she has come to hate – these are characteristics of you but they are not the you who is dying to break out and do something you love. Take an approach based on talent to get your career started down the right path.

Just answer these three simple questions:

Who are you?

What do you want to do?

How do you get hired?

1. Discover Who You Are

There are two ways to answer this. You can explore your talents and/or you can use psychometric testing to discover your preferences. You can take your personal inventory using typologies such as DISC or Myers-Briggs. Some of these may seem costly but they are worth the money you invest.

2. Discover What You Want to Do

Once you have found out who you are it’s time to find out what it is you want to do to find balance in your life and to have a career that is aligns with who you are. Start by doing some brainstorming on careers that might suit you. You can confirm this with a psychometric test.

3. How to Get Hired

Don’t get sidetracked by a great paying job offer. If you develop a plan you are way more likely to get where you want to go at a faster rate. Write down the career you desire and then write down the steps you need to take to get to that career. Finally, you’ll want to create an implementation strategy.

What Are Your Career Goals

Perhaps you already have your career goals in place, but you don’t seem to be reaching them at the pace you had hoped to.

In these cases consider creating a list of your career goals followed by a plan to reach those goals. When you put your ideas to paper and you detail how you are going to reach each of your goals you are twice as likely to reach those goals. Your career is an extension of you, so make sure you have the career that’s right for you.
